The Cleanest and Greenest People and Places

It was recently reported that One Direction star Harry Styles is something of a clean freak. In fact, the Daily Star has even claimed his band mates have started calling him Mr Mop! So who else is famed for their penchant for staying sparkling? We take a look at the celebrity world and places around the globe.

People

Tabloid newspapers often like us to think the celebrity world is an altogether dirty one. But some stars can’t help being squeaky clean when it comes to hygiene. We already know that Harry Styles likes to wear slippers on his tour bus and to iron his underpants. American figure skater Johnny Weir once announced on The Today Show that vacuuming was his favourite pastime. Anyone who’s seen The Aviator will know that Howard Hughes took his own personal bar of soap around with him so as not to be infected by other people’s germs. Oh, and as for environmentally-clean celebs; take your pick from Brad Pitt (founder of the Make it Right Foundation), Leo DiCaprio (who has solar panels on his house and drives a hybrid car), and Natalie Portman; she once designed a line of vegan shoes (true!).

 Places

How does Blighty fare in the fight to be the world’s cleanest country? Unfortunately not as well as many of its European counterparts. According to Forbes, the UK doesn’t even feature in the World’s Top 10 Cleanest Countries. Austria, Sweden and France are all there, but it’s Iceland which tops the bill; its air cleanliness stats are incredible: 97.4% in favour breathability. There’s also a surprise entry at number 10 from Colombia. The average score for biodiversity and habitat is 51%; Colombia scores 82.7%. Also, due to its vast river system, around of 70% of the country’s electricity is provided by hydroelectricity. When it comes to countries being clean in the hygienic sense, things are a little tougher to agree on. Tasty Thailand suggests some Thais take three daily showers. Crazy Engineers says that Australians shower the most. France 24, meanwhile, claims that (quelle surprise) the French are officially the cleanest, despite a stereotypically negative image. We’re guessing this argument will never quite be solved…
